Toad in the Hole

Packed carb and cheap protein in the form of sausages. All with Chipotle Gravy and Tender-stem Broccoli. Learn to make this and you'll be set to impress all your housemates at Uni.


  • 6 Sausages

  • 6 Rashers of Bacon

  • 1 Red Onion (1/2 Diced and 1/2 sliced into strips)

  • 140g plain flour

  • 2 eggs

  • 175ml semi-skimmed milk

  • 1 Cup of Peas

  • 200g of Tender-stem Broccoli

  • 2 Cloves of Garlic (Diced)

  • 1 tsp Chipotle Paste

  • 1 tsp Maple Syrup

  • 3 tbsp of Gravy Granules

Step 1- Prep!

Start by prepping all your ingredients. Pre-heat an oven by setting it up at 180-200 degrees Celsius. Wrap your Sausages with your bacon and add to an oven proof dish with a spray of oil before placing into the oven/ Cook for 15 mins; flipping the sausages and adding the sliced onions halfway through.

Step 2- Bake!

Mix together your egg and milk. Season with salt, and pepper before slowly bringing it together with your flour to make a light airy batter. By this point the fat in your baking tray from the sausages should be fizzing away in the bottom. Add your batter and put straight back into the oven for Stick the tray into your oven and bake for 20 minutes. Once that's done, add your batter and bake at the same temp for 45-55 minutes.

Step 3- Make your sides!

Add your Broccoli and Peas to a Pan of Boiling Water. You don't need a lot of water. just enought to cover the Peas. The goal is to Steam the Veg. Give it 10 mins in the pan before draining. Keep the water though as we're using it for the Gravy.

Fry off your Garlic and Onions with some Oil before adding Maple Syrup and Chipotle Paste. Add your Garlic Granules before adding the Boiled Veg Water to get the consistency of the gravy you want.

Step 4- Serve!

Serve up slices of the Toad in the hole with your Veg and top with Gravy and it's as simple as that. This recipe is super vibrant thanks to the veg and also super comforting.
